Chaban Tea Trays

What Is a Cha Ban?

A Cha Ban (茶盘 / 茶板), also known as a Chaban, Chinese tea tray, or Gongfu tea tray, is the central surface used for traditional Chinese tea brewing.

During a Gongfu Cha tea ceremony, the teapot or gaiwan, fairness pitcher, tea cups, tea pets, and other tea accessories are arranged directly on the Cha Ban.

Beyond creating an organized and beautiful tea space, the tea tray has an important practical function: collecting excess water and tea during brewing.

Hot water is regularly poured over teaware to warm and rinse it, while unwanted infusions and remaining tea may also be discarded directly onto the tray.

Openings in the surface allow the liquid to flow into a removable reservoir underneath or, in some designs, through a drainage system.

Chinese Tea Trays for Gongfu Cha

A good Gongfu tea tray makes traditional Chinese tea brewing considerably more comfortable.

Instead of carefully avoiding every drop of water, you can warm your teapot and cups, rinse your tea, and pour naturally while the Cha Ban collects the excess liquid.

This makes it particularly useful for longer Gongfu sessions with Yixing teapots, gaiwans, Gong Dao Bei, and small Chinese tea cups.

The tea tray also visually defines the brewing space, bringing the different elements of a Gongfu tea set together.

Types of Cha Ban Tea Trays

Chinese tea trays are produced in many different shapes, sizes, materials, and styles.

Common materials include:

• Natural wood
• Bamboo
• Stone
• Ceramic
• Modern composite materials

Cha Ban can be rectangular, square, round, or oval, ranging from compact trays for one or two people to large tea tables designed for elaborate Gongfu tea sessions.

Many traditional designs combine a wooden or bamboo upper surface with a water-resistant removable tray underneath, making the Cha Ban easy to empty and clean after brewing.

When choosing a Chinese tea tray, consider the size of your teaware, the number of people you normally prepare tea for, and the amount of space available for your tea setup.

Choosing a Gongfu Tea Tray

For a compact everyday Gongfu setup, a smaller Cha Ban is usually enough for a gaiwan or teapot, Gong Dao Bei, and several tea cups.

A larger tea tray provides additional space for tea pets, utensils, multiple teapots, and other accessories.

Beyond size and functionality, the Cha Ban is also an important visual part of your tea space. Natural wood and bamboo create a warm traditional atmosphere, while stone and minimalist designs can give the tea table a more contemporary character.

The best Cha Ban is ultimately one that fits both your brewing style and your tea space.
